After experiencing a, fortunately, mild (but still terrifying) case of Covid-19 in March – understanding from inside some of the most frightening aspects of the virus, I read a piece by Helen Ouyang in The New York Times that truly gave me a glimpse of the reality engulfing US hospitals and medical professionals, now the entire world. As I read more about the effect of the virus on Americans and their families, I sat down and began to work through a series of piano pieces. I strived to compose something to honor the dead – to give some measure of solace to families within a grief-filled musical poem. I was particularly affected by the inability of families to be with their loved ones at the time of their passing – of having to mourn at a distance, usually without friends or other relatives present.
